Proposed federal cuts to Medicaid threaten the health and stability of our communities. In Kentucky, over 250,000 people could lose their health insurance and 35 rural hospitals are at risk of closure, more than any other state in the nation. On top of that, we have been facing a physician and healthcare worker shortage. These cuts would disproportionately impact low-income families, seniors, and those in rural areas who rely on Medicaid for essential care. Without immediate action, we risk losing critical healthcare infrastructure and services.

Recent federal legislation proposes significant reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), potentially eliminating benefits for over 2 million Americans, including many Kentuckians. In Kentucky, more than 276,000 households rely on SNAP to put food on the table. Exacerbated by the growing cost of groceries, cuts to this program would increase food insecurity, strain local food banks, and harm families already facing economic hardship.
Kentucky’s rural hospitals are facing unprecedented challenges. With 35 hospitals at risk of closure, our rural communities could lose access to emergency care, maternity services, and critical health resources. These closures would force residents to travel hours for care, endangering lives and destabilizing local economies. Louisville residents will see an increase in wait times when they seek medical care as rural residents seek out care in larger cities.
Having worked in public schools, Cassie has seen firsthand the impact of underfunding on students and educators. Kentucky schools recently lost $87 million in federal funding, affecting teacher development, summer programs, and support for English learners. Additionally, the state’s per-student funding is $1,702 below the national average, and recent changes to the SEEK funding formula do not adequately address these disparities. We must invest in our public education system to ensure every child has access to quality education, regardless of their background or zip code.
Tariffs and trade policies have disrupted Kentucky’s economy, particularly affecting industries like bourbon production and agriculture. Local businesses are facing increased costs and uncertainty, which can lead to potential job losses and economic downturns. As a small business owner, the strength of local businesses is important to Cassie. We need policies that protect Kentucky jobs, support local industries, and ensure economic stability for working families.
Kentucky is home to over 300,000 veterans, many of whom rely on the Department of Veterans Affairs for healthcare, benefits, and support services. Recent federal budget cuts threaten to reduce services and staff at VA facilities, potentially leaving veterans without the care they deserve. We must ensure that our veterans receive the support and resources they need to thrive after their service.
